Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Confirms Skydiving for Open World

Final Fantasy VII: Revelation (最终幻想7:启示), the closing chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, has revealed a new gameplay mechanic. Game director Tetsuya Hamaguchi officially confirmed that the title will include a skydiving system, allowing player squads to board the classic airship Highwind and parachute directly down to the ground. The feature is designed to bridge aerial movement and ground exploration, offering a new experience within the game’s open-world structure. The reveal marks one of the first concrete gameplay details shared for the trilogy’s finale.
Hamaguchi stated that the skydiving mechanic lets the player’s squad travel aboard the Highwind airship and deploy directly onto the surface below. According to the source, this creates a connection between air travel and ground-based exploration rather than treating them as separate phases. The system is described as a core design element built specifically to suit a high-precision open world, giving players a faster and more direct way to move from the skies into their next destination.

Officials explained that the airborne approach was settled on early in the project. Traditional airship landings require large amounts of flat terrain, which would sharply limit map design freedom and damage the integrity of individual scenes. To avoid that drawback, the team abandoned conventional landing methods and explored alternatives better suited to the new title’s environments. The skydiving solution therefore serves both a gameplay purpose and a design constraint, keeping the world’s layouts intact.

The skydiving design takes inspiration from the established systems seen in Fortnite, with controls described as simple and easy to understand, fitting modern player habits. The mechanic removes the need to wait for the airship to find a landing spot, enabling a seamless transition from air to ground and improving overall exploration flow. Final Fantasy VII: Revelation is currently scheduled for release on April 8, 2027. For long-time fans of the remake project, this small but practical detail hints at how the finale will handle its world. 🎮
