FF14 8.0 Overhauls Black Mage, Retires Poetics Tomestones

Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida used two Q&A sessions at the Tokyo Fan Festival to outline a broad set of adjustments headed to the 8.0 update and beyond. The announced changes cover the Black Mage job, gear exchange, fishing, housing, dungeon rewards and character customization. According to the presentation, additional details on jobs, progression systems and character creation will be shared during later livestreams. The scope of the list suggests the development team is revisiting several long-standing systems at once rather than limiting the patch to new battles and story content.
Black Mage’s evolution mode is being reworked. The Triplecast mechanic is being removed, and Ley Lines will no longer force players to remain stationary, addressing two features that have shaped the job’s movement restrictions for years. Separately, a new ranged damage job named Zefa appears to allow players to dye their companion birds. No further details about Zefa’s abilities or its place in party compositions were provided during the Q&A sessions, with more job information expected in upcoming broadcasts.

Tomestones of Poetics, the currency long used to purchase older equipment, will be discontinued. The team said it will provide alternative channels so that players leveling secondary jobs can still obtain gear conveniently. The fishing system is also being simplified: once a bait is unlocked, players can select it freely without carrying physical items in their inventory. Housing is receiving an official fix as well, with most furniture set to support floating placement directly instead of relying on glitch workarounds.

Dungeon reward rules are being adjusted so that players who have already cleared content can help teammates claim their rewards. A feature allowing players to retroactively collect rewards from previous seasons is likewise in development. Island Sanctuary updates will wait until 8.0 is stable, character customization is still being fine-tuned, and an expansion of weapon idle poses is in production. For long-time players, the Poetics retirement and the furniture floating fix may be the most immediately welcome items on this list.
