CD Projekt Red Confirms AI Integration for The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2

Polish studio CD Projekt Red has confirmed it will actively employ artificial intelligence tools during the development of the highly anticipated The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2. According to company management reports, this innovative approach primarily aims to create more realistic non-player characters and optimize production workflows. The studio is currently testing related systems that have already been applied to “dozens of research projects.” This represents a significant technological shift for the developer, though the company acknowledges potential risks associated with generative AI implementation.
The planned AI technology will be applied to “prototype automation, testing, and generating realistic non-player character crowds.” CD Projekt Red’s management reports indicate these systems are undergoing active testing across multiple research initiatives. The studio’s approach focuses on enhancing NPC realism while streamlining development processes, potentially allowing for more dynamic and responsive game worlds. This technical direction marks a notable evolution in how the developer approaches content creation and quality assurance for its major upcoming titles.

Despite embracing advanced technology, CD Projekt Red emphasizes awareness of potential risks. Company management notes that using generative AI introduces “regulatory and interpretative uncertainties,” particularly regarding intellectual property protection for generated content. The studio’s stance on neural networks has evolved over the past two years. In January 2024, co-CEO Adam Badowski stated that while AI could improve development processes, it shouldn’t replace human workers. By March 2025, colleague Michał Nowakowski confirmed research in the area but noted the company wasn’t focusing on generative AI due to copyright complexities.

The current management report reveals a policy shift: CD Projekt Red now plans to more comprehensively integrate generative AI into The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 development. This represents a departure from previous cautious approaches toward such tools in major projects. Given that gaming communities remain deeply divided about neural network applications in the industry, it remains unclear how this decision will affect audience reception of the final products. The studio’s balanced approach—embracing technological advancement while acknowledging regulatory challenges—reflects the complex landscape of AI integration in modern game development, though only time will tell how players respond to these implementations.
