Ace Combat 8 Unveils 35-Minute Tokyo Game Show Gameplay Demo

Bandai Namco showcased a new 35-minute official gameplay demo for Ace Combat 8 (空战奇兵8 希孚之翼) at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show. The footage presents a complete campaign mission, following an aircraft from takeoff through close-range dogfights inside cloud layers, ground strikes, and battles against massive weapon platforms. The presentation highlights campaign flow, combat systems, visual upgrades, and character interactions. With the game scheduled to arrive in just a few weeks, the demo offers the clearest look yet at how Project Aces is evolving the long-running flight action series.
One of the most notable gameplay features is the return of the fan-requested commandable wingman system. Before each mission, players can assign individual aircraft to each of their three wingmen. During combat, they can issue orders at any time, directing squadmates to provide cover, focus fire on a target, or deploy electronic countermeasures (ECM). Rather than serving as background voices, wingmen now function as active combat units that meaningfully affect the battlefield. A new dual special weapon system also lets players switch equipment mid-mission, allowing them to adapt to both airborne and ground targets.

Visually, the title significantly strengthens its cloud system. Multi-layered dynamic cloud formations feature realistic lighting changes, including sunlight piercing through clouds and fog obscuring the player’s view, which deepens the sense of aerial immersion. Cockpit interiors, aircraft body details, explosions, and atmospheric effects have all been upgraded compared to previous entries. The presentation balances cinematic camera work with a smooth, arcade-style flight shooting feel, confirming that the game remains approachable rather than a hardcore flight simulation, preserving the series’ signature accessible controls and flashy aerial combat.

Developed by Project Aces and published by Bandai Namco, Ace Combat 8 is built in Unreal Engine 5 and continues the series’ Strangereal world. Set in 2029, the story follows the Central Usea Federation after a lightning invasion by the Sotoa Republic leaves much of its territory occupied. The “Wings of Siphon” title was originally a false hero identity created by the military to boost morale; the player inherits it and leads three Joker Squadron wingmen. The game launches October 2 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Preorders include the F-14A and the classic Ace Combat 0, while the deluxe edition grants four days of early access, with more multiplayer details promised before launch. For longtime fans, this looks like a promising return to form.
