Yoko Taro: Game Dream Fulfilled, Now Working to Prevent Dementia

Yoko Taro, the acclaimed game director behind the NieR and Drakengard series, shared his personal creative philosophy during a talk at the Japanese gaming event “10th Mosaic.” Speaking in conversation with Ender Lilies producer Keiichi Okabe, Taro reflected on his long career and the reasons he remains active in the industry. His candid remarks drew wide discussion across the gaming community after being reported on October 8.
According to Taro, his game development ambitions were already fully realized with the original Drakengard. That project, he explained, allowed him to bring his creative ideas to life, making it the point where his dream was complete. Everything he has done since, in his view, amounts to the “remaining time” of his life after that goal was achieved. He also noted that thanks to his personal savings and a pension, he no longer needs to work to support himself, and on an emotional level sees no need to continue.

When asked why he keeps working in games despite having no financial need, Taro offered a lighter answer: he does it to help prevent age-related cognitive decline. He said he had heard of people who worked their entire lives and then experienced rapid mental deterioration after retirement. By continuing to take on the pressures and frustrations of high-intensity game development, he reasons, he can keep his mind sharp. He described treating the work as a way to exercise his thinking and look after his well-being.
Beyond games, Taro has not released a self-developed title in some time. He is currently contributing to a new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime project, serving as its scriptwriter. The role marks another creative venture for a director best known for his work in gaming, keeping him active across entertainment. It may not be a new game announcement, but Taro’s candid take on why he keeps creating offers a refreshing look at one of the industry’s most eccentric voices.
