Toronto Boy Steals Family Cash, Spends $2,000 on Roblox Gift Cards
An 11-year-old boy in Toronto reportedly stole family emergency cash and used it to purchase $2,000 (~¥13,482) worth of Roblox gift cards at Walmart, converting the entire amount into the game’s virtual currency, Robux. According to the boy’s parents, the incident caused direct financial loss to the household. The case has drawn attention to the ease with which young children can make large unauthorized purchases through physical gift cards, which currently carry no age restrictions or identity verification requirements at checkout.
The boy’s parents said he took an envelope containing $2,000 to $3,000 in emergency savings while accompanying his grandmother on a shopping trip. Taking advantage of an unmonitored moment in the toy section, he completed the purchases in two separate transactions, each buying five gift cards worth $200 apiece. He never informed his elders and deliberately concealed the spending afterward. The family only discovered the missing money when they later counted their reserve funds.
After the discovery, the parents brought the gift cards and purchase receipts to Walmart to request a refund. The retailer refused, citing its policy that gift cards are non-refundable once sold. The parents expressed confusion over the decision and questioned why the store did not carry out basic identity checks or seek guardian confirmation for a minor making such a large purchase of prepaid cards.
Roblox itself is free to play, but character customization and certain gameplay features require Robux, the platform’s virtual currency. Young children often struggle to distinguish between virtual items and real-world money. Physical gift card purchases have no age limit and do not require binding a payment account for verification, making it easy for minors to spend large sums without oversight. The report advises parents to keep cash secure and monitor children’s spending to avoid similar losses. This one is a costly reminder that virtual currency can carry very real consequences.
