The Long Dark’s Iron Road DLC Launches in Early Access on PC

Hinterland Studio has launched Iron Road, the new expansion for its first-person survival game The Long Dark (漫漫长夜), in PC early access on October 27. The DLC is priced at ¥87 and carries a 10% first-week discount that brings it to ¥78.3. Players must own the base game to access the expansion, and a release window for console versions has not been announced. Iron Road shifts the series to a storm-battered archipelago and introduces a railway network, a restorable steam train, and new survival tools. The studio plans an 18-to-24-month early access period.
The expansion takes place on Cauldron Island, an archipelago made up of five islands named after the daughters of the McLeod family. More than 100 kilometers of abandoned railway cover the islands, with frozen tracks, rusted steam locomotives, derelict stations, and harsh, storm-prone coastal terrain. As players push along the island’s ridge line, the aurora effect becomes increasingly extreme. Hinterland describes this as a new preview of how the aurora changes the world after the WINTERMUTE story. The setting gives the survival sandbox a more industrial, rail-bound identity while keeping the series’ cold-weather focus.

The central objective is to find and restore a prototype steam train that has slept for a century. Once repaired, the train becomes a mobile shelter that players can use to travel deeper into the island’s interior along the rails. The journey is tied to the mystery of industrialist Hamish McLeod, whose empire was built on whale-oil technology; players are tasked with uncovering why it collapsed. Hinterland is also adding ocean ecology, a whale-blubber heater, wax-cylinder recordings, train engine upgrades, and interior customization to support both survival and narrative.

Iron Road is available now in PC early access. The expansion costs ¥87, with a 10% discount during its first week reducing the price to ¥78.3. It requires the base game, and console versions have no confirmed launch date. Hinterland plans to update the DLC over an 18-to-24-month early access cycle. Some new equipment and supplies unlocked in Iron Road can be carried into the base game’s survival mode. For longtime players, the train-as-mobile-base idea is the expansion’s most intriguing hook; whether it reshapes The Long Dark’s wider gameplay will depend on how the lengthy early access period develops.
