Super Danganronpa 2×2 Hands-On Preview Reveals Kyoki Mode Details
Super Danganronpa 2×2, a current-generation revival of the 2012 high-speed reasoning action series’ second entry, is set to launch on January 14, 2027. Publisher Spike Chunsoft confirmed the game will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The package pairs a visually refreshed version of the original scenario with a brand-new storyline called Kyoki Mode. During a recent media hands-on event, a Famitsu writer sampled the opening of Kyoki Mode and the original mode’s class trial sequence.
Kyoki Mode begins much like the original scenario, but the story pivots when Monokuma hands the students a special present known as a “Kyoki.” These items vary widely, ranging from literal weapons to objects that can be cleverly used in tricks, and some are reportedly duds. Revealing one’s own Kyoki to others breaks the rules, a restriction newly added to the electronic student handbook. The “traitor” featured in the original scenario also appears in Kyoki Mode, with Monokuma hinting at their presence and visibly unsettling the students. Whether the traitor’s identity mirrors the original remains an open question.

The hands-on session revealed substantial visual and production upgrades. Character portraits now include animations that enrich conversation scenes, with expressive personalities like Ibuki Mioda, Mikan Tsumiki, and Kazuichi Soda gaining extra presence. Map movement has transitioned from the original side-scrolling style to a 3D top-down view, complete with animated Monokemon restricting certain areas. Players can also open a menu to review the electronic handbook and skills, where new abilities such as “Phoenix Protection” and “Natural Flash” join returning favorites. Kyoki Mode further introduces a new debate system called “Discussion Collect,” alongside the class trial mechanic of firing collected “Kotodama” bullets to expose lies.

Producer Shohei Sakakibara and director Takahiro Suzuki shared further details during a Q&A session. Kyoki Mode reportedly offers roughly 20 percent more volume than the main scenario and was designed to be played after the original. A new character, Soutarou Higashi, voiced by Natsuki Hanae, will appear, though his role in the story stays secret until launch. Because Kyoki Mode features different culprits and victims than the original, all punishments differ, and it supports up to 4K resolution. Both modes received newly re-recorded voice work. For longtime fans eager to see how the alternate timeline unfolds, this revival is certainly one to watch.
