Street Fighter Director Reveals Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li Film Focus

The new live-action Street Fighter movie is set to launch globally on October 16, and with less than a day remaining before release, the film’s director has outlined the core creative direction in a recent media interview. The adaptation will place franchise icons Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li at the center of its narrative. The director emphasized that the film will preserve the signature exaggerated style of the original games’ techniques rather than trading them away for realism, keeping the memory points that longtime players recognize.
The director recalled spending his childhood playing Street Fighter 2 on home consoles with friends, an experience that left a deep impression and became the core motivation for taking on the project. He explained that he did not want to make a serious, heavy fighting film, but instead aimed to preserve the original’s fun, free, and slightly mad atmosphere. The goal is to bring the games’ colorful, distinctly characterized cast to the big screen faithfully.

Addressing the faithful recreation of classic moves, the director acknowledged that live-action filming cannot fully replicate motion that defies physics, so the team made extensive balancing adjustments during design. Chun-Li’s signature kicks were blended with breakdancing and capoeira elements, keeping the move recognizable while making it natural and believable for a live-action performance. Meanwhile, the famous moment where Ken performs a Shoryuken against Dhalsim fully retains the game’s exaggerated presentation style, satisfying longtime fans’ emotional expectations.

To match the source material as closely as possible, the production team communicated extensively with Capcom and the core development leads behind Street Fighter 6 throughout filming, repeatedly confirming worldbuilding details and key elements. The car-smashing bonus stage shown in the trailer and the “YOU WIN” text that appears after a match are described as nostalgia easter eggs planted specifically for veterans of the series. With the final countdown underway, the film opens worldwide on October 16, 2026. For fans raised on the arcade era, the director’s insistence on honoring the original’s spirit is an encouraging sign.
