Phantom Blade Zero: Wooden Sword Runs Possible, Weapon System Detailed

S-Game (灵游坊) has shared new details about the weapon system in its dark wuxia action game, Phantom Blade Zero (《影之刃零》). Founder Soulframe Liang (梁其伟) revealed that even the game’s weakest weapon — a wooden sword — can theoretically carry players through the entire adventure, a choice the team intentionally preserved to protect gameplay freedom. The title offers more than 30 main weapons and over 25 sub-weapons for players to experiment with. The design philosophy marks the studio’s latest effort to blend deep combat customization with traditional Chinese martial arts themes.
According to Liang, every weapon in Phantom Blade Zero features its own independent growth system, combo module, and exclusive skills. The result is that a weapon at level 1 and the same weapon at level 30 may play completely differently. Some weapons even alter core mechanics, changing how dodging, defending, and execution moves function. This layered approach means players can build highly distinct combat styles around their preferred tools, rather than following a single optimal path. The developers framed the system as a way to reward experimentation across a long playthrough.

Weapons are designed with counter relationships. Light, thin blades are less effective against heavy shields, encouraging players to switch to heavier weapons or ranged options to break an enemy’s guard. However, the game does not force this approach — players can instead pick a targeted weapon for specific fights or commit to a single weapon for the whole journey. Liang said the design reflects a Chinese martial arts idea: once mastery is high enough, a fighter can defeat powerful enemies without legendary arms.
Many of Phantom Blade Zero’s weapons come from boss drops, meaning late-game gear sees limited use during a first playthrough, with more of that experience extending into New Game Plus. The game, built on Unreal Engine 5, launches on October 29, 2026 for PC and PS5. China region digital pricing is set at ¥268 (~$37) for the standard edition and ¥328 (~$45) for the deluxe edition. Offering a wooden-sword clear path is a bold statement of confidence in the combat design, and it is a detail worth watching as launch approaches.
