Edgerunners Season 2 Used Cyberpunk 2077 as a Location Scout

Studio Trigger has taken an unusual approach to building the world of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2. According to GamesRadar+, the animation team used the “virtual camera” feature in Cyberpunk 2077 to scout locations inside Night City, treating the open-world RPG as a reference set for the anime. Showrunner Bartosz Sztybor explained in an interview that the studio’s staff are devoted fans of the game, a factor that shaped how the production handled its background work.
Speaking with GamesRadar+, Sztybor said Trigger’s members are loyal players of Cyberpunk 2077 and know Night City better than he does. That familiarity led him to step back from dictating specific settings in the script. Instead of naming exact spots for each scene, he handed location selection over to director Kai Ikarashi, whose team explored the game firsthand to find streets and scenes that suited the narrative.

That method gave the animation team a way to draw more heavily on the city environments already built for the game. By wandering the in-game streets, the crew could identify locations whose atmosphere matched the tone of the story. Sztybor noted the approach also creates extra payoff for viewers who are familiar with Cyberpunk 2077, since recognizable places can appear in the anime and deliver small surprises.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 arrives on Netflix on October 20. The new season introduces several characters, including Wick Kingsley, Roman, Talia, and D. For a series tied so closely to its source game, letting the animation staff scout Night City themselves seems like a smart use of the material — familiar streets may end up doing some of the storytelling work 😊
