Earth Defense Force 6.2 Shows Off Weapon Customization at TGS 2026
The 2026 Tokyo Game Show (TGS2026), running from September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, hosted a stage broadcast titled “Day 3” from D3 Publisher on September 19. During the “EDF Frontline Camp” segment, Earth Defense Force series producer Nobuyuki Okajima appeared. The latest entry, Earth Defense Force 6.2, is scheduled to launch on March 18, 2027. D3 Publisher also has ported titles planned, with one set for October 18, 2026, and another for January 28, 2027, marking a rapid succession of releases for the series.
Okajima opened with a remark about the fanbase, saying that a characteristic of EDF fans is that they get happier the more bugs there are, and that the team has increased them abundantly in this game. The footage shown during the stream also revealed new enemy designs resembling a crab and a mushroom. The producer’s comments underlined the series’ identity, where overwhelming enemy numbers are presented as a selling point rather than a drawback.
Asked about the development approach for Earth Defense Force 6.2, Okajima first deflected with “It’s a secret (laughs),” before explaining that producing a numbered “7” entry would require several years of work, which could lead to the series being forgotten. The team therefore decided to develop something with an impact comparable to a numbered title. During live gameplay, customization parts, described as the ones that shine extra brightly, dropped alongside regular weapons inside special boxes. After customizing a weapon, the producer successfully cleared a stage, suggesting customization will heavily influence success.
Responding to audience calls to see HARD mode, Okajima personally took on the challenge. He equipped parts that inflict confusion, plague, and burn effects on enemies before deploying, but the sheer volume of foes led to an immediate game over, drawing laughs. Enemy counts in Earth Defense Force 6.2 are reportedly roughly doubled, and difficulties of HARD and above are said to present a hellish sight. Attendees at TGS2026 can try Earth Defense Force 6.2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 version at the D3 Publisher booth, receiving a non-sale sticker after the demo. For longtime fans, the emphasis on customization is an intriguing new wrinkle for the series.
