Paranormasight FILE38: Ise Mermaid Story Launches February 19
Square Enix’s Paranormasight FILE38: Ise Mermaid Story launches today, February 19, 2026, bringing a new supernatural mystery adventure to Nintendo Switch, smartphones, and PC platforms. The sequel to the acclaimed Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo shifts from Tokyo’s urban legends to the coastal setting of Ise Bay, focusing on mermaid folklore and the promise of immortality. Director Takanari Ishiyama and producer Kazuma Oshu revealed in an extensive Famitsu interview that the team deliberately chose a brighter, more cheerful visual style to expand the series’ appeal while maintaining its core supernatural mystery elements. The game features an entirely new cast of characters on the fictional Kame Island, where players will unravel secrets surrounding mysterious mermaid legends.
According to the development team, the visual direction represents a conscious departure from the darker, horror-tinged atmosphere of the first game. The key visual features blue skies, white clouds, and smiling characters instead of the previous game’s black backgrounds and frightened expressions. Director Ishiyama explained this was a strategic choice to make the game more accessible, particularly for players who found the first installment too frightening. The game’s age rating has also been lowered from CERO D (17+) to CERO C (15+), reflecting the reduced horror elements. However, the team assures that unsettling moments and supernatural themes remain integral to the mystery narrative.

The story unfolds on Kame Island in Ise Bay, inspired by the real-life Kamishima but fictionalized to incorporate supernatural elements. Players control a male ama (traditional female diver) protagonist named Yusa Minakuchi, marking a significant departure from previous characters. A new diving mini-game allows players to explore underwater environments, addressing the developers’ desire to create more vertical exploration opportunities. Character designer Gen Kobayashi implemented improved character art with proper left-right flip differences, resolving issues from the first game where mirrored images caused inconsistencies with character details like moles and accessories.

The development team faced internal pressure after the first game’s success, with producer Oshu noting that approval for the sequel took time despite positive reception. The mermaid theme was chosen specifically to appeal to international audiences, as the previous game’s focus on Japanese urban legends proved less accessible overseas. Music composer Hidenori Iwasaki created an ethnic, primitive-inspired soundtrack using diverse instruments like celesta and harp to capture the island’s unique atmosphere. With its fresh coastal setting, reduced horror elements, and new gameplay mechanics, Paranormasight FILE38 represents an ambitious evolution of the series that should appeal to both existing fans and newcomers.
