PS6 Handheld Reportedly Targets Late 2027, Runs PS4 Games Natively
A new report from Japanese outlet Sumahodigest claims that Sony is developing a standalone PlayStation handheld capable of running games natively, with a target launch window pointing to late 2027. Unlike the PlayStation Portal, which relies on PS5 remote play or cloud streaming, this device is described as a true handheld console in the tradition of the PSP and PS Vita. The report positions it as a full gaming system rather than a companion accessory, and suggests Sony may align its release with the next-generation PS6 console.
According to the report, the handheld is said to run PS4 games natively and support a selection of optimized PS5 titles. It may also be compatible with games from the PS6 generation in the future. The device is positioned closer to a traditional handheld than to a reduced streaming screen. If the information proves accurate, it would mark Sony’s return to dedicated portable hardware following the PSP and PS Vita, a lineage the report explicitly references when describing the machine’s place in the PlayStation lineup.
The hardware is reported to use a custom system-on-chip co-developed by Sony and AMD, built on TSMC’s 3nm process. The CPU is said to combine Zen 6c cores with low-power Zen 6 LP cores, while the GPU reportedly uses an RDNA 5 architecture with 16 compute units. The device is also claimed to include 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a high-speed NVMe SSD. If the leak is accurate, the report states its performance would be noticeably higher than existing portable devices.
On the graphics side, the handheld is said to support next-generation PSSR 3.0 upscaling and may include frame generation. Because handhelds face power and thermal limits, AI upscaling would allow lower internal rendering resolutions to be brought back up, easing GPU load. The report adds that the handheld could launch alongside the PS6 in late 2027, potentially placing both consoles in the same PlayStation ecosystem and raising the chances of shared accounts, games, and platform experiences. This is one rumor worth watching closely, though Sony has not confirmed any of it.
