Sakura Wars 3 Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Dreamcast Release
Sakura Wars 3, the beloved dramatic adventure game in the Sakura Wars series, celebrates its 25th anniversary today. Originally released on March 22, 2001, for the Sega Dreamcast, the game marked a significant transition for the franchise from its Sega Saturn origins. The third installment shifted the setting from Tokyo to Paris and introduced a completely revamped battle system. Sakura Wars 3 moved the series from Tokyo to Paris, where protagonist Ichiro Ogami becomes commander of the Paris Combat Revue. The game introduced the ARMS (Active & Realtime Machine System) battle system, which allowed players to act freely until a gauge at the bottom of the screen depleted. This system provided greater strategic freedom compared to previous entries. The transition to 3D environments and removal of grid-based movement further enhanced gameplay flexibility. Players could allocate their gauge entirely to movement, attack and then defend, or employ various tactical combinations during combat encounters.
The Paris Combat Revue featured five distinct members: Erica Fontaine, a clumsy nun-in-training; aristocratic Grissin Bloom; circus performer Coquelicot; criminal Lobelia Carlini serving a 1,000-year sentence; and Japanese noblewoman Hanabi Kitaoji. Character interaction was handled through the LIPS (Live Interactive Picture System), where players made timed dialogue choices. An enhanced “Analog LIPS” system allowed for nuanced responses using the analog stick. Each character also had their own mini-games, such as Coquelicot’s addictive “Crazy Rally” racing game, adding variety to the gameplay experience.
The game was noted for its high-quality opening animation, which became iconic among fans despite rumors about its production costs being exaggerated. The series continued with a new installment released on December 12, 2019, returning to the fictional Taisho-era Tokyo setting with a completely renewed battle system. Sakura Wars 3’s 25th anniversary serves as a reminder of the franchise’s ability to evolve while maintaining its core identity.
