Witcher Remake May Change Wild Hunt’s Original Design

The upcoming remake of the original Witcher game may feature significant changes to the portrayal of the Wild Hunt, according to comments from the original game’s lead story designer. Artur Ganszyniec, who served as lead story designer on the 2007 release, recently discussed how the remake will likely need to adjust the mythological group’s appearance and characterization. In a commentary video, Ganszyniec explained that the original game presented the Wild Hunt as spectral wraiths rather than the armored elves they were later revealed to be in The Witcher 3. This creates a narrative inconsistency that CD Projekt Red will need to address in the remake to maintain continuity across the series.
In the first Witcher game, the Wild Hunt was designed as “wraiths, and omens of death, and tools of destiny” according to Ganszyniec. The lead story designer noted that during development of the 2007 title, the team didn’t yet know the Wild Hunt would be revealed as “elves in armor” in later installments. The original portrayal drew from European folklore where the Wild Hunt appears as a cavalcade of spectral warriors led by a godly entity. This mythological interpretation was woven into the game’s lore, with the group being described as “an omen of war and tragedy” during the original game’s ending sequence.

The narrative challenge arises from the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt later established that these beings are actually powerful elves seeking to stop a magical infection called the White Frost. Ganszyniec specifically mentioned that the King of the Hunt, who appears as “the personification of death” in the original game, will require “some retrofitting” in the remake. The original design featured a ghostly blue, hulking figure with a skeletal face, which was later revealed in The Witcher 3 to be part of his armor rather than his actual appearance.
CD Projekt Red will likely aim to create greater consistency between the remake and the established lore from later games in the series. Ganszyniec believes “this part will probably need to be changed a bit in the remake” to align with the canonical understanding of the Wild Hunt as elves rather than wraiths. The developer’s commentary suggests that while the original game presented the Wild Hunt according to legendary interpretations, the remake will need to incorporate the narrative developments from subsequent titles. This represents one of the more significant lore adjustments that fans can expect when the remake eventually releases, though no specific timeline has been announced for the project.
