Uncharted New Game Rumors Surface, Xbox Shifts to Self-Sustaining Model

This week’s gaming news roundup brings several major developments, including fresh rumors of a new Uncharted title possibly featuring Nathan Drake’s daughter, significant changes to Microsoft’s Xbox business strategy, and critical reception concerns for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. The industry also saw revelations about Bungie’s pre-acquisition struggles, alongside reports that Ubisoft may have canceled plans for a Star Wars Outlaws sequel. Each story carries implications for the gaming landscape, from franchise directions to corporate restructuring.
Veteran games journalist Jordan Middler has reported that a new Uncharted game is now in active development, following years of speculation since 2019. The project has reportedly passed through multiple studios including Sony San Diego, Santa Monica, Bend Studio, and Naughty Dog. Another source, Alir, indicated the title is unlikely to launch anytime soon, with the earliest estimated release window being 2029. On the narrative front, rumors suggest Nathan Drake’s daughter Cassie — who appeared in Uncharted 4’s finale — could take on a lead role, making her a natural successor to the series. Sony has not yet commented on these reports.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stated that Xbox will no longer receive unlimited financial support from the parent company and must now operate as a self-sustaining business. After 25 years of heavy gaming investments, the focus is shifting to profitability and efficient content monetization. Nadella supports a significant restructuring led by new head of Xbox, with future resources concentrated on flagship franchises like Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Halo, while budgets for smaller creative projects will be reduced. The long-term strategy includes deeper integration across console, PC, cloud, and mobile platforms, with Project Helix — technology enabling Xbox consoles to run PC games — serving as a strategic pillar.

GameSpot has delivered a sharp critique of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, calling it “quite boring” after previewing two classic levels. Reviewer Jean-Luc Seipke noted that while the remake adds modern FPS mechanics like sprinting and energy swords, these changes dilute the original’s unique identity. Separately, reports indicate Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment have canceled plans for a Star Wars Outlaws sequel, as sales fell short of expectations. Unlike the Star Wars Jedi trilogy, this title will reportedly not become a franchise. Six planned DLCs, including one based on a spin-off novel, also appear to have been scrapped. Ubisoft has yet to officially respond.
