Street Fighter 6 Welcomes Alex with New Grappling Moves on March 17
Capcom has announced that Alex will join the Street Fighter 6 roster on March 17, 2026, as part of a major update to the fighting game. The character, who originally debuted as Ryu’s replacement protagonist in the Street Fighter III series, returns with a revamped moveset that blends his traditional grappling style with new mechanics. According to a hands-on preview, Alex maintains his identity as a command throw-focused character while gaining the new “Breaker Stance” system. The update also features motion capture contributions from professional wrestler Kenny Omega, who lends his signature moves to Alex’s animations.
Alex retains his signature command throw “Power Bomb,” which functions similarly to Manon’s throws with varying range and startup depending on button strength. When hitting an opponent from behind, it transforms into “Power Drop,” which can be followed up with his iconic “Hyper Bomb” in Overdrive versions. His “Flash Axe” move changes properties based on strength: light versions are safe on block, medium versions are combo tools that lead to knockdowns, and heavy versions (called “Flash Chop”) create frame advantage on block and trigger back-turned states. The “Air Knee Smash” serves as a reliable anti-air with invincibility against aerial attacks, with heavy versions hitting grounded opponents.

The new “Breaker Stance” is activated by pressing down plus two punch buttons, creating a stance where Alex cannot block but gains access to multiple derivative attacks. Similar to Chun-Li’s “Serene Stream” but with different mechanics, the stance offers punch derivatives like “Palm Contact” (cancelable), “Shoulder Launcher” (anti-air), and “Heavy Lariat” (frame advantage with armor when held). Kick derivatives include “Tactical Leap” (unique jump arc), “Air Stampede” (aerial stomp with frame advantage), and “Sweep Combination” (low attack). Special inputs provide throw options like “Hyper Lift” and “Dangerous Approach,” plus the advancing “Slash Elbow” that launches on counter hits.

Professional wrestler Kenny Omega contributed motion capture for Alex, most notably for the Level 2 Super Art “Omega Wing Buster.” This special move can only be performed from an Overdrive Power Drop on a back-turned opponent and features Omega’s signature pointing taunt followed by a running knee strike and finishing hold “One Winged Angel.” Early impressions suggest Alex plays simpler than expected, using crouching medium punch and standing heavy punch for basic gameplay before transitioning to Breaker Stance for pressure situations. His standing heavy punch and kick boast exceptional range, with the heavy punch being cancelable when held. While appearing complex initially, Alex’s straightforward strike/throw mixup makes him accessible for players who want to focus on screen action rather than complex inputs. The character represents a thoughtful evolution of his grappling roots while honoring professional wrestling aesthetics through Kenny Omega’s collaboration.
