Pokémon Wind/Wave Revealed as Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive for 2027

On February 27, 2026, during the Pokémon 30th Anniversary Direct, The Pokémon Company officially unveiled the tenth generation mainline titles Pokémon Wind and Pokémon Wave. The games are scheduled for global simultaneous release in 2027 and will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. As the first series entry specifically designed for the new console, the games adopt an “Infinite” theme and feature a massive open world set in a Southeast Asia-inspired archipelago region. Players will explore seamless islands and underwater areas while experiencing a dynamic weather system that profoundly impacts battle environments.
The games introduce significant gameplay advancements while retaining the traditional turn-based framework. A semi-real-time mechanism enhances combat fluidity, and a new “Infinite Evolution” concept offers multiple branching evolution paths for certain Pokémon. The dynamic weather system directly intervenes in battles—fire-type moves gain power in sunny conditions, water-type attacks can moisten terrain in rainy weather, and storm conditions may strengthen water skills and influence tactical layouts. The games also introduce mechanics for reviving fainted Pokémon during battles, adding strategic depth to encounters.

Three new starter Pokémon debut: the grass-type “叶眉鸟” (a small chick Pokémon with the Overgrow ability), fire-type “博姆耿” (a puppy Pokémon with the Blaze ability and a glowing neck organ), and water-type “妙澪儿” (a water gecko Pokémon with the Torrent ability that launches elastic water balls). Special Pikachu forms called “风风皮卡弟” and “波波皮卡妹” make their first appearance, with their roles remaining mysterious but promised to be crucial to the adventure. The games utilize the new “Pokémon Engine X” with a development budget of 30 billion yen, showcasing significantly improved lighting effects, vegetation density, and water surface quality.

The games deeply reconstruct the traditional “capture-train-battle” cycle, requiring players to complete 18 attribute challenges to unlock the true ending. An antagonistic organization called the “Land Development Team” attempts to expand land area, creating a narrative conflict between nature and civilization. According to developer Game Freak, the titles aim to break traditional design conventions by leveraging new technology and the dynamic weather system to enhance freedom and interactivity, hoping to reignite veteran player enthusiasm while attracting newcomers. With the NHK Symphony Orchestra performing the soundtrack, the games promise an immersive experience when they launch in 2027.
