Pokemon Champions Producer Reveals Focus on Visuals and Competitive Balance

The visual presentation of the Pokemon series has been a hot topic among players in recent years. From the widely criticized texture quality and technical issues in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to the architectural modeling debates surrounding Pokemon Legends Z-A, each new release has invited scrutiny. Pokemon Champions, the latest entry in the franchise, is no exception. In a recent interview with Eurogamer Germany, producer Masaaki Hoshino discussed the game’s visual development approach, offering candid insight into how the team balanced graphical ambitions with the demands of a competitive battle-focused title.
Hoshino, a self-proclaimed Pokemon fan, stated that he fully understands and shares the community’s current discussions surrounding the series’ visual quality. He revealed that the development team has done its utmost in both visuals and gameplay, but the core focus has always remained on the battle system. Since Pokemon Champions is a highly competitive title, ensuring fairness and the stable operation of the traditional battle mechanics was the team’s top priority. This emphasis on competitive integrity guided many of the technical decisions made during development.

Reflecting on his past experience with Pokken Tournament, Hoshino noted that one of his goals back then was to create the best-looking Pokemon game of that era, a feat he believes the team accomplished. However, he pointed out that Pokken Tournament only displayed two Pokemon on screen at a time, whereas Pokemon Champions presents far greater technical constraints. Despite these challenges, Hoshino set new personal targets for the project. He emphasized two areas in particular: ensuring every Pokemon has its own shadow, which he believes creates spatial depth essential for visual realism, and developing all battle effects from scratch.

Hoshino personally reviewed each battle effect in detail, joking that there were “really a lot of moves” to go through. These effects were built from the ground up for Pokemon Champions, representing a significant investment in visual polish. Although the Pokemon series has faced criticism for its graphics in recent titles, early indications suggest that Pokemon Champions may be shifting the narrative. Based on the initial trailer alone, fans have noted a positive impression compared to recent Game Freak-developed games. This early reception suggests the team’s efforts on shadows and effects are resonating with the audience, making this a title worth watching as more details emerge.
