Nioh 3 First DLC Keian Hellish Transformation Arrives August 19
Team NINJA has announced that the first paid downloadable content for Nioh 3, titled Keian Hellish Transformation (Keian Jigokuhen), will launch on August 19, 2026. The DLC takes players to a hellish version of Edo set in the year 1651, where the shogun has fallen and chaos reigns. The story follows protagonist Takechiyo, who after becoming shogun, is transported through time to a future Edo ravaged by war and supernatural forces. Players will encounter the one-eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and a Spanish envoy named Rodrigo as they unravel a new conspiracy surrounding spirit stones. New features include a new field map, weapon types, and a high-difficulty mode.
The DLC introduces two new weapon types built around an offensive-defensive playstyle: the Hokotate (samurai style) and Shinobi Hokotate (ninja style). These weapons combine a sturdy shield for defense with a sharp spear for thrusting attacks. Players can also throw the shield for mid-range offensive options. The weapons feature foreign-inspired designs attributed to the Spanish alchemists appearing in the story. This marks a new combat direction for the Nioh series, offering tactical depth through the shield-and-spear combination. New guardian spirits, martial skills, ninjutsu, and onmyo magic techniques are also being added to expand build variety.
A new high-difficulty mode called Journey of Enlightenment (Satori no Tabiji) serves as the third playthrough. In this mode, certain enemies placed on the field receive a random enhancement buff called Ichinan, which significantly boosts their stats but guarantees divine equipment drops upon defeat, creating a high-risk, high-reward dynamic. The DLC also introduces the Hyakkyo Hyakkai Emaki system, a piece of equipment that players can strengthen by completing procedurally generated battles. With billions of possible combinations of enemies, stages, and special rules, the system offers immense replayability. Once unlocked, players can swap one special ability on the emaki each time they clear a battle, and online co-op for up to three players is supported.
The Keian Hellish Transformation DLC is priced at ¥2,750 (~$19/~¥138) for individual purchase. A season pass covering both planned DLCs is available for ¥5,500 (~$38/~¥275) and includes the Chichiko no Netsuke accessory as a bonus. The second DLC, titled Amakusa Rebellion (Amakusa Tairan), has not yet been assigned a release date. Players must progress through a certain portion of the main game to access DLC content. Nioh 3 is currently available on PS5 and PC platforms, having launched on February 6, 2026. With a substantial amount of new content and replayability features, this DLC looks like a strong offering for both dedicated players and newcomers alike.
