Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 PS5 Gets Free PS VR2 Support in 2026
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s PlayStation 5 version will receive a significant free update in 2026 that adds full PS VR2 support. According to series lead Jorg Neumann, this is not a simple adaptation but a complete redesign of the experience for virtual reality. The update will mark the first time console players can experience near-real flight simulation through PS VR2 hardware. The development team faced substantial technical challenges in adapting the complex cockpit interfaces and ensuring smooth performance in VR environments.
Neumann explained that hundreds of cockpit instruments and knobs required completely rewritten interaction models to work naturally with PS VR2 Sense controllers. The team developed frame replication technology to meet high frame rate demands for smooth rendering. They also tackled FSR-based foveated rendering issues to prevent pixel errors from affecting visual quality. These technical innovations were necessary to transform the detailed flight simulation into a comfortable VR experience without compromising the simulation’s renowned accuracy.
The development was inspired by Gran Turismo 7’s VR mode, with particular attention to scale perception and immersion. Neumann described how flying a helicopter next to a rock wall in VR allows players to intuitively feel the massive mass of the cliff face. Over 100 aircraft have been individually polished for VR, with the Boeing 737 and Guimbal Cabri G2 helicopter offering distinctly different control experiences in virtual reality. Each aircraft required specific adjustments to ensure authentic handling characteristics translate properly to the VR environment.
The Red Bull Air Race VR mode was praised by Neumann as a “stunning experience,” where the sensation of turning your head to find navigation markers during high-speed turns creates what he calls “another dimension” of presence. Professional pilots who tested the VR implementation reported that actions like shoulder-checking runways and judging aircraft position through side windows closely resemble real flying, with muscle memory transferring perfectly. This feedback suggests the update brings flight simulation remarkably close to actual piloting experiences, making it a significant advancement for simulation enthusiasts.
