Leaks Ruined Surprise? Ex-Nintendo Exec: Ocarina of Time Remake Reveal Fell Flat

Former Nintendo executives Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have weighed in on the recently revealed remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, arguing that its announcement during the latest Nintendo Direct was significantly undermined by prior leaks. Speaking on their podcast, the duo suggested that what should have been a show-stopping finale for the presentation instead felt like a foregone conclusion. According to Ellis, the reveal lacked the shock and awe that Nintendo typically aims for with major announcements, leaving many viewers with a sense of麻木 (numbness) rather than excitement.
The root of the issue traces back to March 2026, when prominent leaker NatetheHate published a detailed list of unannounced Nintendo projects. The leak included a Star Fox remake, a Switch Sports sequel, and most notably, plans for an Ocarina of Time remake. The document also mentioned a Mario Kart World DLC slated for 2027 and a brand-new 3D Mario title. For months, fans had been bracing for these reveals, meaning that when the Direct finally arrived, little of what was shown came as a genuine surprise.

Kit Ellis elaborated on the disappointment, noting that fans had already discussed multiple scenarios for how the Ocarina of Time remake might be announced. When the actual trailer aired — a short clip of Link lying on the ground — it failed to generate the excitement it deserved. “It all felt expected,” Ellis said. “Many hoped the Direct would offer more surprises, but Nintendo stubbornly stuck to its original plan.” He acknowledged that Nintendo typically does not alter its broadcast schedule due to leaks, but suggested that in this case, it was clearly not the optimal approach.
While Nintendo’s resistance to changing plans in response to leaks is understandable from a production standpoint, the Ocarina of Time remake deserved a reveal that matched its legendary status. The leak cycle robbed both the company and its fans of a genuinely magical moment. For one of gaming’s most beloved titles, that is a genuine shame.
