God of War: LAUFEY Announced as PS5 Exclusive with Faye as Playable Protagonist

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio have officially unveiled God of War: LAUFEY, a brand new mainline entry in the God of War series, during the closing segment of the PlayStation State of Play livestream. For the first time in the franchise’s two-decade history, players will step away from Kratos and take control of Faye — the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus — as the sole playable protagonist. The announcement was accompanied by a 20-minute gameplay demo trailer that immediately generated significant buzz across the global gaming community.
God of War: LAUFEY is being developed entirely by Santa Monica Studio, the same team behind the 2018 God of War and God of War: Ragnarok. Series creative director Cory Barlog is returning as project lead. According to the studio, the project was secretly greenlit in 2019 during the mid-development phase of Ragnarok and has been in the works for nearly seven years. The game is now in an advanced development stage, indicating a polished, deep-cycle build already in place as the team moves toward final production.

As a PS5 exclusive, the title is being optimized specifically for the console’s hardware capabilities. God of War: LAUFEY will support native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with ray tracing, as well as a performance mode targeting 120 frames per second. The game world, referred to as the Eternal Realm, will feature dynamically shifting biomes that change according to the mythological civilization being explored, with environments ranging from deserts and glaciers to ancient mystical ruins, all rendered with high-fidelity detail.

Sony has confirmed that God of War: LAUFEY is not a DLC expansion or a spin-off, but rather a full-fledged mainline entry in the God of War universe, tasked with expanding the series’ overarching narrative. The game is a permanent PS5 exclusive with no plans for a PS4 or PC release. No specific release window has been announced yet, though Sony stated that development is progressing smoothly and more information will be shared in phases. Given the bold shift in protagonist and the studio’s pedigree, this is shaping up to be one of the most significant entries in the franchise’s history.
