Former SIE President Says PS5 Price Cuts Unlikely Due to AI Chip Demand

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment America president and CEO Shawn Layden has stated that the PlayStation 5 is unlikely to receive a price reduction during its current lifecycle. In a recent interview on the PSI podcast, Layden explained that global chip and semiconductor market pressures have made it increasingly difficult for console manufacturers to lower hardware production costs. Unlike previous generations where price cuts were a standard mid-cycle strategy, the current market environment prevents Sony from following the same path with the PS5.
Layden cited the PlayStation 2 as a historical example of successful price reduction strategy. The PS2 achieved record sales of approximately 160 million units, becoming the best-selling console of all time. A key factor was its aggressive price cuts, dropping from $399 at launch to as low as $199, which attracted budget-conscious casual gamers and cross-platform users. However, Layden noted that this “cut price to boost sales” model is simply not replicable in the current generation due to fundamental shifts in the technology landscape.

According to Layden, the primary reason for sustained high hardware costs is the shifting priorities within the semiconductor industry. After the cryptocurrency boom, chip manufacturers have now redirected their focus toward the more lucrative artificial intelligence sector. This has severely squeezed the production capacity and pricing flexibility previously available for gaming console semiconductors. With fewer chipmakers prioritizing gaming hardware and AI commanding premium pricing, console makers have lost the bargaining power needed to reduce component costs.
Industry predictions cited by Layden suggest that next-generation console launch prices could potentially exceed $1,000 (approximately ¥7,200). The traditional consumer expectation of “buy later, pay less” appears to be broken in the current market. With rising costs across all sectors and persistent chip pricing pressure, later console revisions may ironically be more expensive rather than cheaper. This high hardware barrier could shrink the console gaming audience, potentially transforming gaming consoles into luxury items affordable only to dedicated core gamers. For players hoping to snag a discounted PS5, the window may have already closed.
