Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Demo Now Available
Koei Tecmo Games has released a playable demo for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake on March 5, 2026, giving players an early look at the upcoming survival horror title. The demo allows players to experience the opening segment of the game, featuring improved graphics and sound design alongside new gameplay mechanics. Players can transfer their save data from the demo to the full game when it launches on March 12, 2026. The remake is a complete overhaul of the 2003 classic that follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they explore a haunted village filled with vengeful spirits.
The demo showcases the game’s early stages where sisters Mio and Mayu, lured by crimson butterflies, become lost in the abandoned Minakami Village. Players will encounter spirits in dilapidated buildings and engage in combat using the upgraded Camera Obscura. One notable new feature is the ability for Mio to hold hands with her sister Mayu, adding a new layer of interaction between the characters. The demo provides a taste of the atmospheric Japanese horror setting that has defined the series since its original release over two decades ago.
The demo is available for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Koei Tecmo has also announced an official pre-release live broadcast scheduled for March 10, 2026, from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM Japan time. The broadcast will feature MC Matsushima Hatsune, guest Go☆Jas, and directors Nakajima Hidehiko and Shibata Makoto. The program will focus on live gameplay demonstrations and highlight the game’s key features, though schedules and content may change without notice.
The full remake launches on March 12, 2026, and represents a complete visual and technical overhaul of the 2003 survival horror classic. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they visit a valley about to be submerged by a dam project. When Mayu follows crimson butterflies into a “village erased from maps,” Mio must search for her sister in a village where night never ends, inhabited by spirits seeking escaped twins.
