Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Version Receives High Praise from Digital Foundry

Digital Foundry has released a comprehensive analysis of the Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 version, which launched on February 24th, and their assessment is overwhelmingly positive. The technical analysis group described the port as an extremely high-quality adaptation that has exceeded player expectations, especially following the initially disappointing Skyrim port that was later fixed. The Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 version represents a significant achievement in portable gaming performance, offering players multiple performance options while maintaining visual fidelity across different play styles.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version provides three preset performance modes that work in both docked and handheld configurations. Players can choose between 30 frames per second mode, 40 frames per second mode designed for 120Hz displays, and 60 frames per second mode. According to Digital Foundry, visual quality remains nearly identical across all three modes, with texture quality, shadows, render distance, vegetation density, and volumetric lighting effects all preserved. The only parameter that scales based on the selected frame rate is the resolution itself, allowing for flexible performance tuning.

In docked mode, the 30fps mode targets 1440p resolution, while the 40fps mode reduces to approximately 1080p. The 60fps mode may drop to around 720p in more demanding scenes. Handheld mode follows the same logic: 30fps mode achieves about 900p, while 60fps mode can reach 540-600p in the most challenging scenarios. Frame rates remain stable in the 30fps preset and mostly stable in the 40fps mode. However, the 60fps mode experiences frame rate fluctuations in complex areas and intense combat, with the lack of variable refresh rate technology making this more noticeable.

Bethesda has confirmed that deep learning DLSS technology will be introduced in a future patch, which is expected to significantly improve image quality. While this may come with some performance trade-offs, Digital Foundry notes it could provide substantial benefits, particularly in the 60fps mode. Overall, even without DLSS, Digital Foundry considers the Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 version a pleasant surprise: it remains faithful to the original, includes complete content, offers more variety than expected, and delivers impressive frame rate flexibility and performance that surpasses initial expectations. This port demonstrates that quality adaptations are possible on the hybrid console platform.
