Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Celebrates 15th Anniversary on PSP
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy marks its 15th anniversary today, having originally launched on PlayStation Portable on March 3, 2011. The game serves as a sequel to 2008’s Dissidia Final Fantasy and was preceded by a paid prequel titled ‘Prologus’ that released on January 18, 2011. This prequel offered over 10 hours of content including story chapters and arcade-style battles, with accessories transferable to the main game. The anniversary highlights the enduring legacy of this Final Fantasy crossover fighting title that expanded the roster and gameplay systems significantly from its predecessor.
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy introduced nine new playable characters, bringing the total roster to 31 fighters. The new additions included Kain from Final Fantasy IV, Gilgamesh from V, Tifa from VII, Laguna from VIII, Yuna from X, Prishe from XI, Vaan from XII, Lightning from XIII, plus the original character Desperado Chaos. The narrative depicts the 12th war between the gods Cosmos and Chaos, serving as a prequel to the original game’s 13th conflict. The story features character-driven developments including Kain’s early betrayal, staying true to his established persona.

The game overhauled the progression system from a board game-style layout to an explorable field map where players could gather information from allies and trigger battles by encountering enemy symbols. New combat mechanics included an assist mode that allowed summoning support characters using an assist gauge that filled through varied attack combos. Character abilities were refined, with Lightning featuring an Optimus Commander system that switched between attacker, blaster, and healer roles, while Yuna’s summon master abilities added strategic depth.

The title included a complete remake of the original Dissidia Final Fantasy, allowing players to experience both stories in one package. A new labyrinth mode expanded upon the previous game’s duel colosseum, requiring players to acquire equipment and summon stones within the mode rather than importing them from story progress. Looking forward, a new smartphone game in the series is scheduled for release in March 2026, featuring PvPvE boss battles set in modern Tokyo with characters wearing contemporary outfits. The 15th anniversary serves as a reminder of how this ambitious crossover successfully blended characters from across the Final Fantasy universe into a cohesive fighting experience that still resonates with fans today.
