Control: Resonance Director Reveals Optional Bosses and September Launch

Remedy Entertainment has revealed new details about Control: Resonance, the upcoming sequel to the 2019 action-adventure hit Control, following an interview with game director Mikael Kasurinen. Rather than calling it Control 2, the studio has opted for a subtitle referencing the mysterious resonance phenomenon tied to a paranormal disaster in Manhattan. Set seven years after the original story, the game follows Dylan Faden, brother of protagonist Jesse, as he is released by the Federal Bureau of Control to hunt for his missing sister while battling a reality-warping cosmic entity known as the Resonance. The game is scheduled for a September 24, 2026 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
Kasurinen confirmed in a MinMaxx interview that many of the game’s boss fights are entirely optional. Players can also challenge these bosses in any order they choose, a design choice that Kasurinen compared to the Mega Man series — defeating a boss grants the player access to that enemy’s unique abilities. This flexible progression system encourages experimentation and replayability. The director also noted that some optional bosses carry emotionally poignant backstories, adding narrative depth beyond pure combat. The game marks a shift from the original’s shooting-and-exploration focus toward a more action-driven combat system, while retaining the series’ signature brutalist sci-fi and supernatural horror aesthetic.

Contrary to what some fans might expect, Kasurinen stated that the core of the story is not about saving Jesse or saving Manhattan, but rather about “taking control of your own life.” He described the game’s midpoint as the single biggest surprise, without revealing further details. The game world features significantly larger areas than initially anticipated, though players may find it easy to get lost during exploration. To help navigate the sprawling environments, a map offering a “strategic perspective” of the city will be available. Newcomers can play independently of the original, though the game contains numerous easter eggs and references to the first Control story.

Control: Resonance launches on September 24, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will feature full Simplified Chinese voice acting. Pricing is set at ¥268 (~$37) for the standard edition and ¥328 (~$45) for the deluxe edition in the China region. Developed by Finnish studio Remedy, the title continues the series’ legacy of surreal, reality-bending storytelling paired with visually striking environmental design. With flexible boss encounters, a deeply personal narrative direction, and a wealth of original-game callbacks, Control: Resonance is shaping up to be a meaningful evolution for the franchise that longtime fans and newcomers alike can look forward to.
