Japanese indie developer STUDIO.D0DO has released a demo for their upcoming 2D omnidirectional shooter AREA WARS, accompanied by a competitive tournament offering free copies of the full game. The demo became available on February 27, 2026, and features the game’s unique chain explosion mechanics where defeating enemies creates blasts that can trigger additional explosions. A special tournament running until March 5 offers the top eight scorers free copies of the complete game upon its March 6 release, with the highest scorer receiving special recognition as ‘Demo Champion’ in the game’s credits.
AREA WARS presents a simple yet strategic shooting experience where players battle enemies within dynamically changing, enclosed areas that shrink and transform over time. The game features only three controls: shooting, bombing, and movement, with no character upgrade systems to distract from pure combat focus. Each wave introduces different enemy formations and attack patterns, while the area’s shape changes create constantly evolving tactical situations. Despite being confined to the play area, walls have no collision damage, allowing for casual play without excessive frustration.
The game’s signature mechanic involves chain reactions where defeating enemies creates explosions that can engulf nearby foes, with each successive chain increasing the player’s score multiplier. The demo tournament runs from February 27 at 8:00 to March 5 at 23:59 Japan Standard Time, with the top eight scorers receiving free copies of the complete game.
