大侠立志传外传 Demo Launches with Major Gameplay Overhaul

The open-world martial arts RPG 《大侠立志传外传》(The Legend of Heroes: Side Story) has released a free playable demo during the February new games festival. The demo is available simultaneously on PC platforms and represents developer Half Bottle Immortal Vinegar’s new beginning after establishing an independent studio. As a derivative work set in the same universe as the original 《大侠立志传》, this side story continues the series’ exploration of martial arts ideals while introducing significant gameplay changes. The demo includes approximately one hour of content covering the prologue and first chapter, featuring character creation, initial story exploration, encounters with four companions, and over 50 side events.
Compared to the original game’s emphasis on complete freedom as a “martial arts survival simulator,” the new installment represents a return to more structured storytelling. The developer describes the original as leaning toward a freeform CRPG experience, while the side story resembles a JRPG with predetermined adventures but undecided outcomes. This doesn’t mean abandoning the series’ signature freedom—early demo content uses clear story progression to familiarize players before gradually opening up event branches and exploration areas. Player choices now have deeper impacts on subsequent story divergences and companion fates, strengthening character bonds and narrative agency.

The combat system represents one of the most significant changes, returning to traditional turn-based frameworks while introducing new mechanics. The game features core combat cycles including “fighting spirit chain attacks,” “weakness breaking,” and “companion combination attacks,” with the latest developer logs revealing “five elements mutual generation and restriction” gameplay. Technically, the new version fundamentally addresses historical issues like eight-direction movement, character customization, and map verticality. The engine upgrade adds lighting and color to the original pixel world, while new character illustrations refresh the visual style.
Since its initial reveal in September last year, the game has undergone several small-scale internal tests and appeared at the Weplay offline exhibition. The current demo represents the first public online trial, with development still actively incorporating player feedback. The interface has been redesigned to better match series aesthetics while simplifying layout and functionality—inventory screens now include secondary categorization and “all” tags for clearer information presentation. The development team states the primary purpose of this trial is collecting feedback on system responsiveness, tutorial flow, and version stability. This demo serves as a large-scale public test for a game that represents both a continuation of the series and a fresh start after addressing technical limitations of the original. For fans of traditional turn-based martial arts games or those interested in exploring new directions for the 《大侠立志传》 IP, this demo offers a substantial preview of what’s to come.
