Word Play (文字遊戯) PS5 Release Date Confirmed for August 20, 2026
Publisher Flyhigh Works has announced that the PlayStation 5 version of the character-driven text adventure Word Play (文字遊戯) will launch on August 20, 2026. The announcement arrived alongside the release of the Nintendo Switch version of Chapter Zero (文字遊戯 第零章), a demo and prequel to the main game that launched today, August 6. Word Play is described as a “new text adventure” in which players control a hero named “I” (Watashi) who must save a world ruled by a demon dragon. Its defining feature is a visual style composed entirely of characters and words, with every element of the world built from text.
In Word Play, characters are the key to everything. Players manipulate text by combining and separating characters, rewriting sentences to overcome obstacles blocking their path. In some places they must find a “gate” to escape, while elsewhere they need to turn the “unclear” into the “clear.” The PC version currently available has earned “very positive” user reviews, and the title has collected multiple awards, including the PlayStation Award at BitSummit Let’s Go!!, the Best Game Design Award at TGS 2025’s Sense of Wonder Night, the Shuhei Yoshida Award at INDIELiveExpo, and first place in the Dengeki Indie Grand Prize 2026 selected by Shuhei Yoshida.

The Chapter Zero demo released on Switch today serves as a prequel to the full game, telling the story of the 4,396th hero while offering a taste of the retail version. In the main story, set in the year 2102 of the Mado calendar, the demon dragon attacks the royal capital, marking the beginning of a nightmare across five continents. As the new hero of the hero’s village, players must overcome trials set by three masters, obtain three sacred tools, and set out on a journey to slay the dragon.

The PS5 Japanese edition of Word Play is scheduled for release on August 20, 2026, priced at 3,630 yen including tax (roughly $24 / ~¥175 CNY). It is a single-player title, and the publisher notes that this product is the Japanese version of the original Chinese-language game, containing Japanese content only. With its clever wordplay-driven puzzle design and its impressive list of festival awards, this is one to watch for fans of narrative and puzzle adventures when it arrives next month.
