Unreal Engine 5.8 Lightweight Lumen Mode Unlocks 60 FPS on Handhelds

Epic Games has released a preview of Unreal Engine 5.8, introducing a new lightweight Lumen mode that marks a major step forward for performance on portable devices. The updated global illumination system, which Epic calls “probe-occluded irradiance field” technology, runs at roughly twice the speed of standard high-quality Lumen. According to Epic, this breakthrough allows handheld hardware to achieve a stable 60 frames per second — a significant improvement given that the standard Lumen mode previously only reached 60 FPS on PlayStation 5. The update is particularly relevant for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which has long been seen as a challenging target for Unreal Engine 5 titles.
Epic has confirmed that the lightweight Lumen mode is being developed specifically with modern handheld consoles in mind, including the Nintendo Switch 2. The company stated that this new setting will become the standard configuration for portable devices, directly addressing the core performance bottleneck that Lumen and Nanite technologies pose on less powerful hardware. Many Unreal Engine 5 games previously required severe graphical cuts when ported to handhelds, with some projects disabling key engine features entirely to maintain smooth gameplay. The new mode is expected to significantly reduce such compromises.

Beyond the Lumen upgrade, Unreal Engine 5.8 brings several other notable enhancements. These include improvements to the procedural content generation system, an updated vegetation editor, and new tools for deploying large-scale NPCs based on MetaHuman technology. Epic is also preparing to officially roll out MegaLights, a feature that enables more efficient and dynamic lighting performance. These additions collectively point to a more developer-friendly and performance-optimized engine pipeline, especially for teams targeting cross-platform releases across both home consoles and portable devices.

Epic has not yet announced a specific release date for the stable version of Unreal Engine 5.8. The current preview build is available for testing, allowing developers to experiment with the new lightweight Lumen mode and other features ahead of the official launch. For handheld gamers and developers alike, this update represents one of the most meaningful performance advances in the Unreal Engine 5 lifecycle. If the mode delivers as promised, it could fundamentally change what third-party developers can achieve on the Nintendo Switch 2 and similar portable platforms.
