Ubisoft Open-World Punisher Rumor Sparks Player Backlash

A self-described parody account posting as Culture Cave has claimed that Ubisoft is developing an open-world game based on Marvel’s The Punisher, with a target release window of 2028. The claim circulated widely online and reportedly drew around 220,000 views. No official announcement has been made, and neither Ubisoft nor Marvel has commented on the post. Despite the rumor’s questionable origin, the reaction it generated was immediate — and overwhelmingly focused on the combination of Ubisoft and an open-world structure.
According to the report, the post offered no evidence beyond the assertion itself. It stated only that Ubisoft was working on an open-world Punisher title aimed at 2028, without naming a specific studio, platforms, or any supporting material. The account is known for joke content. What made the post notable was not its credibility, but the speed and uniformity of the response from players, most of whom reacted to the idea before questioning whether the rumor was real at all.

Replies under the post were almost unanimous in their resistance. Comments such as “For God’s sake, please not Ubisoft” and “Oh god, not Ubisoft” appeared repeatedly. One user mocked the studio’s open-world conventions, joking they could not wait “to climb towers to unlock the map.” Another wrote, “I already have a Punisher game, thanks,” implying a preference for existing adaptations. Few commenters debated whether the character suits an open-world format at all.

According to the report, criticism centered almost entirely on why the project should not belong to Ubisoft, rather than on what a Punisher open-world game could actually be. That a widely shared fake leak could provoke this kind of response suggests players hold complicated feelings about the studio’s open-world template. Editorial note: the reaction says less about The Punisher as a property than about how much patience that formula has already used up with a segment of the audience.
