Story of Seasons SFC Original Turns 30, Farm Sim Pioneer’s Anniversary
August 6, 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Super Famicom original Story of Seasons (Bokujō Monogatari), which first launched on this day in 1996. Published by Marvelous, the series stands as a genuine pioneer of the farm and ranch simulation genre, with an influence that extends to countless titles that followed. So deeply is the franchise rooted in gaming culture that veteran fans still describe any game with farm management as “like Story of Seasons.” To date, more than 30 series titles have been produced, offering a remarkably diverse range of experiences enjoyed by players of all ages.
From the very beginning, the series captured the ideal of a slow, self-directed life that many players dream about. In the original, players not only care for animals such as cows and chickens, but also tend fields growing crops like turnips, potatoes, and corn. Gathering wood to expand the family home and gradually building up the ranch further deepened that foundation. The relaxed, free-spirited daily routine proved so appealing that it became a defining template for the entire simulation genre.

The original already included a surprising extra layer: players could pursue romance with the marriage candidates living in town and eventually marry. This love-and-marriage system has remained a staple delight since the very first entry. Early installments offered only a small number of animals and crops, but the series steadily broadened its variety with each release. Seasonal events and other features also became more colorful over time, giving players more reasons to keep returning to their ranches.

Beyond the main line, the franchise has spawned collaboration and spin-off works, the most popular being the fantasy RPG-flavored Rune Factory series. Rune Factory began as one of the titles created to celebrate Story of Seasons’ 10th anniversary before growing into its own franchise. Meanwhile, the latest Story of Seasons entry launched on August 28, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, as a full remake of a 2008 Nintendo DS title, with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions following on May 28, 2026. Thirty years on, the series remains a genre-defining slow-life classic — a milestone well worth celebrating.
