Stellar Blade: Blood Rain Trailer Criticized Over AI-Generated Chinese Text

Shift Up officially unveiled Stellar Blade: Blood Rain at Summer Game Fest, revealing the next entry in the Stellar Blade series with a trailer and key art featuring prominent Chinese signage and text elements. However, the reveal has drawn criticism from players who claim portions of the Chinese characters appear to be AI-generated, containing character combinations that do not exist in modern Chinese. The controversy has sparked discussion about the developer’s use of AI-generated assets in a major public trailer.
Months before the official reveal, the first concept art for Stellar Blade: Blood Rain had already caught the attention of observant players. Many noted that the depicted cityscape bore a strong resemblance to Chongqing, a Chinese mountain city known for its layered high-rise buildings and complex three-dimensional urban structure. The dense vertical layout and atmospheric design suggested the developers were drawing real-world inspiration from Chinese urban environments. The newly released trailer and key art further reinforced this connection, incorporating Chinese-language signage and text prominently throughout the visuals.

Shortly after the trailer’s release, players pointed out that some of the Chinese characters used in the trailer appear to be nonsensical combinations that do not exist in modern Chinese vocabulary. These characters resemble text generated by AI systems that attempt to mimic Chinese writing without understanding actual character composition. Daniel Camilo, a game consultant based in China, confirmed on social media that the trailer indeed shows signs of AI generation. He noted that he initially hesitated to point this out, speculating that the text might be placeholder assets intended for replacement during later development stages.

Camilo further emphasized that seeing such content in a first public trailer leaves a poor impression, describing it as hastily put together. While the text could potentially be temporary placeholders rather than final assets, the decision to include them in a public-facing reveal trailer has raised questions about Shift Up’s production pipeline. The situation highlights the risks developers face when using AI-generated assets without thorough human review, especially when representing real-world languages in global marketing materials. This is definitely a point worth watching as Shift Up likely addresses the feedback before the game’s eventual release.
