Starfield ‘Free Passage’ Update Launches April 7 with Major Exploration Features

Bethesda has officially announced the “Free Passage” update for Starfield, the largest free content expansion since the game’s launch. The comprehensive update will be released on April 7th and will be available for free across all platforms, coinciding with the launch of the Starfield PS5 version and the paid DLC “Earth Fleet.” According to Bethesda chief creative producer Tim Lamb, this update incorporates extensive player feedback and aims to deliver Starfield in its best possible state, offering both new and returning players a fresh exploration experience. While not officially labeled as a “2.0 version,” the update represents a significant overhaul of core systems.
The centerpiece of the Free Passage update is the new cruise mode, which allows players to fly freely between planets within star systems. During these journeys, players can move around inside their ships and will encounter random interference events, significantly enhancing immersion. This feature addresses one of the most requested improvements from the community, transforming space travel from a loading screen experience into an interactive journey. The update focuses on three core pillars: expanded exploration, streamlined gameplay flow, and enhanced customization systems.

The update introduces X-Tech, a new resource that enables players to reforge legendary equipment effects and unlock higher-tier legendary ranks. Players can also use this resource to upgrade various ship systems, providing more meaningful progression paths for end-game content. Resource management has been optimized with the addition of outpost shared containers and an integrated database, reducing inventory management friction. A particularly charming addition allows players to adopt custom pets called nanoweasels at their outposts, adding a personal touch to base building.

Beyond the major systems, the update adds several new features including the ability to directly upgrade Starborn powers using quantum essence and a quantum entanglement device that enables cross-save item transfers. The game world expands with new anchor stations and asteroid bases, while the Moon Jumper vehicle provides new traversal options. New enemy modifiers and weapon skins offer additional customization, and the overall experience has been refined based on player feedback. With its comprehensive feature set and April 7th release date, the Free Passage update represents Bethesda’s commitment to evolving Starfield into a more complete and engaging space exploration experience for all players.
