Sega Unveils $7,000 Sonic 35th Anniversary Porcelain Statue

Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and Sega has chosen an unexpected way to mark the occasion. Rather than announcing a new game, the company has unveiled a handcrafted ceramic artwork. Sega recently announced a collaboration with Japanese porcelain brand YOYOYO to produce the Sonic 35th anniversary porcelain statue, titled “Infinite Blue.” The piece is positioned as a high-end collector’s item rather than a mass-market product, reflecting Sega’s decision to commemorate the milestone through traditional craftsmanship instead of software.
According to the announcement, the statue is handcrafted using the traditional Arita-yaki porcelain technique. Its blue tones come from gosu, a cobalt-blue underglaze pigment. YOYOYO states that this pigment produces a color that does not fade, intended to echo Sonic’s status as the “world’s fastest blue” and to create a quality described as “eternal blue.” The work is designed with a lifespan of at least 100 years. Its base is made from Amakusa porcelain stone, whose white surface is intended to better set off the glaze color.

Only 50 pieces of the Infinite Blue statue will be produced worldwide. The Japanese domestic price is 1,000,000 yen including tax, while the overseas price is set at $7,000 (~¥50,000), excluding tariffs, taxes and shipping. The extremely limited run and premium price point place the statue among the more expensive Sonic collectibles released to date, and Sega appears to be leaning into scarcity as a central part of the release strategy.

Distribution of the 50 pieces is deliberately restricted. Only five will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis on October 9 at the “SONIC the Exhibition -ACROSS GENERATIONS-” event held at Ikebukuro PARCO in Tokyo. The remaining 45 pieces will be allocated by lottery through YOYOYO’s official website, with applications open from October 9 to 18, and each person limited to applying for one piece. This is clearly one for dedicated Sonic collectors, though the price will keep it far out of reach for most fans.
