Rockstar Art Director Reflects on the 2022 GTA 6 Leak’s Impact

Rockstar Games art director Aaron Garbut has once again spoken about the massive Grand Theft Auto 6 leak of 2022, describing the incident as something far more personal than a conventional security breach. In a recent interview reported by GameRant, Garbut explained that the fallout went well beyond unfinished gameplay footage spreading across the internet. At the time of the leak, the game had not yet reached a stage where it was meant to be shown publicly. Years of work were exposed without warning, and he said the emotional weight of that moment was difficult to bear.
According to the report, the 2022 incident began when a hacker used phishing tactics to gain access to Rockstar’s internal communication channels, then published a large amount of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay footage still in development. Because the game had not been officially unveiled, the material was never intended for public eyes. The leak set off a chain reaction: the hacker faced legal consequences, and many players judged the visuals of the unfinished build, generating controversy and multiple difficulties for the development team.

Garbut used a vivid comparison to describe how the leak felt, saying it was like someone rifling through his personal belongings or breaking into his mind to drag early creative work into public view. He described the experience as very strange and invasive, and said it was emotionally hard to endure. Unfinished work, he noted, is simply not suited to being shown publicly, and the sudden exposure of so much labor delivered a heavy personal blow.

Even years after the event, Garbut’s account highlights how a data breach can affect the people who make games, not just the company’s marketing plans. The interview focused on the emotional aftermath rather than offering new information about the project itself. Garbut’s candor is a reminder that early builds are working material, not finished products, and judging them as final releases misses the point of a long development cycle.
