Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak Tops China Box Office

《生化危机:爆发夜》(Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak) opened in mainland China on October 5, 2026, and immediately claimed the top spot at the box office. According to reported figures, the film secured 118,000 screenings on its first day and earned ¥75.5 million, capturing 37.5% of the daily box office and setting a new first-day record for a new release during this year’s National Day holiday. Within two days its total surpassed ¥100 million, and by October 12 it had accumulated more than ¥274 million (~$38 million).
The film’s early performance outpaced two other notable horror releases this year, 《痴迷》(Obsession) with ¥236 million and 《后室》(The Backrooms) with ¥187 million. It also marked the first time in nearly 14 years that an imported film topped China’s National Day box office. Reception has been strong on both sides of the Pacific: Douban opened at 7.3, currently the highest-rated new film of the holiday season, while overseas the film holds a 96% Rotten Tomatoes freshness score and an 81 Metacritic rating. Its global box office has exceeded $320 million, far above the 39% series-high score achieved across the previous 24 years of live-action Resident Evil films.

Despite featuring none of the franchise’s iconic characters—no Leon, Claire, or Chris—the film is being described as the most faithful Resident Evil adaptation yet. Its scene progression mirrors Resident Evil 2’s level flow, moving roughly every seven to eight minutes from an outlying road to a woodland farmhouse, barn attic, sewer, and finally an Umbrella laboratory. The timeline slots into a gap in the games: between Jill’s awakening in her Raccoon City apartment on the night of September 28, 1998, and Leon’s arrival on September 29. The protagonist, Brian, is an ordinary man who fumbles with his pistol and lives with the consequences of his mistakes.

The film is packed with nods to the games. Brian’s first weapon is a Beretta 92FS picked up from a fallen officer, the standard sidearm of S.T.A.R.S. He later finds a shotgun and an MP5, following the classic pistol-to-shotgun-to-SMG upgrade path. Doors and locks refuse to budge even under gunfire, a signature Resident Evil frustration. Typewriters, green herbs, first aid spray, and medical kits all make appearances. The film runs about 90 minutes. Editor’s note: for longtime fans, this adaptation finally feels like a Resident Evil story worth watching, even if newcomers may find its quirks puzzling.
