Rainbow Six Tactics Brings Turn-Based Strategy to the R6 Series
At gamescom 2026, held August 26–30 in Cologne, Germany, Ubisoft held a pre-briefing for its newly announced Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics, described as the series’ first turn-based tactical simulation. Set in the world immediately following the “Rainbow collapse” that occurred between Year 10 and Year 11 of Rainbow Six Siege, the game places players in the role of series regular Paul Bishop. For the first time in franchise history, players take command as “Six,” the leader of the Rainbow unit, tasked with rebuilding and strengthening the squad while confronting a new global threat and a conspiracy lurking behind it. The title is being developed as a fully single-player experience, with no in-game store or monetization elements.
The game’s core loop is built around two phases: Strategic Management at the home base and Tactical Missions in the field. Between missions, players return to headquarters to develop various departments, upgrade operators, and allocate resources to strengthen the unit’s overall combat capability. This management layer adds strategic depth beyond individual firefights, giving players control over the long-term growth of Rainbow as an organization before they redeploy to the field.

Tactical Missions unfold as turn-based strategy battles across locations ranging from urban areas to remote farms. A drone reconnaissance phase is key to success, clearing the fog of war to reveal enemy positions, traps, and hidden supplies before breaching. After thorough scouting, players enter the game’s centerpiece breach planning phase, designating multiple entry points, operator placements, gadgets, and targets before executing a synchronized assault. All maps are handcrafted, though variables such as enemy placement, bomb locations, and hostage positions are procedurally generated, ensuring variety across hostage rescue, bomb defusal, and VIP protection objectives.

Rainbow Six Tactics features 15 hand-picked operators from Rainbow Six Siege, each retaining their signature gadgets and abilities, which can be combined to create advanced tactical synergies. The game is scheduled for release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with development led by Ubisoft Paris. With the franchise’s tactical DNA translated into a turn-based format and a strictly single-player, no-microtransaction structure, this marks a bold new direction for the series — one definitely worth keeping an eye on.
