Metroid Ravenous Announced for Switch 2, Launching January 28, 2027
During the Nintendo Direct stream aired on September 9, 2026, Nintendo announced Metroid Ravenous (メトロイド ラヴェナス), a brand-new 2D entry in the long-running Metroid series. The broadcast, which showcased upcoming titles for Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, set a release date of January 28, 2027 — a Thursday — for the game, which is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo is credited as the game’s maker. Notably, Ravenous represents the first new 2D Metroid in about six years, following the 2021 release of Metroid Dread. The announcement also detailed multiple editions, a CERO rating for ages 12 and up, and a companion amiibo lineup.
Metroid Ravenous gives the 2D branch of the Metroid series its first new title since Metroid Dread arrived in 2021, ending a gap of roughly six years. Nintendo serves as the maker of the title, which is scheduled to launch on January 28, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2. The game carries a CERO rating of 12 and above, meaning it is deemed suitable for players aged 12 and older in Japan. The reveal kept its focus on the release window, available editions, and companion products.
Nintendo detailed four main purchase options for the Japanese market. The standard download version is listed at 7,980 yen (tax included), approximately $53 (~¥380), while the physical package edition retails for 8,980 yen, about $60 (~¥430). A Special Edition comes in two variants: a download version bundled with the physical package at 11,980 yen (~$80 / ~¥580), and a full package edition at 12,980 yen (~$87 / ~¥630). A bonus-only Special Edition containing no game card is also offered at 5,000 yen (~$33 / ~¥240).
A lineup of companion products was unveiled alongside the game. New amiibo include Samus in her Metroid Suit for Metroid Ravenous, a second Samus figure from the Metroid series line, and a birdman statue amiibo. A Metroid Ravenous Nintendo Switch 2 card case with a steelbook finish was also announced, with prices for the amiibo and card case listed as open. After a six-year wait since the last 2D adventure, this announcement positions Ravenous as a major early 2027 highlight for Switch 2 owners — definitely one to watch for Metroid fans.
