Mega Man: Dual Override Debuts Proto Man Gameplay for Spring 2027
Nintendo aired a new Nintendo Direct presentation on September 9, 2026, delivering fresh details on Mega Man: Dual Override. The broadcast confirmed that Proto Man will join Mega Man as a playable character and revealed the first gameplay footage of the shield-wielding robot. According to the official press release, Proto Man fights with a distinct close-range style that sets him apart from the series protagonist. The game is currently scheduled for a spring 2027 release. Additional amiibo figures and a Tokyo Game Show appearance were also announced during the presentation, giving fans several updates to look forward to.
Proto Man is a character Dr. Light first developed as his original humanoid prototype robot. Since his debut, he has appeared across the series as both an enemy and an ally. In Dual Override, he wields the Blues Buster, which has a short range but high attack power, alongside the Blues Shield for a variety of attacks, making him a close-range specialist. Mega Man, by contrast, is described as an all-rounder who uses the long-range Rock Buster and distinctive special weapons. Proto Man can also equip custom chips that unlock a range of abilities.
The new Override system lets characters voluntarily release their limiters to unlock power beyond their normal cap for a brief period, and Proto Man can use this mechanic as well. While active, it grants overwhelming strength, but once it ends, the recoil from exceeding his limits temporarily lowers various stats. The press release notes that judging the right moment to activate Override, based on the flow of battle, is the key to making the most of Proto Man’s abilities. This risk-and-reward mechanic appears central to the title’s combat design.
Mega Man: Dual Override is set to launch in spring 2027. amiibo figures for both Mega Man and Proto Man will arrive on the same day, with release dates, specifications, and supported features to be announced later. The title will also make its first Japanese playable appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held from September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe. Visitors who try the game at the Capcom booth will receive a microfiber handkerchief. The game is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC platforms.
