Marathon Confirms Pure PvE Mode Coming in Season 2 This June

Bungie has officially confirmed that Marathon, the extraction shooter formerly known as The Lost Star Ship Marathon, will introduce a pure PvE mode in its upcoming second season. Game director Joe Ziegler published an open letter addressing the community, acknowledging that the game’s high-intensity PvPvE experience has proven challenging for many players. The announcement marks a significant shift in the game’s direction, as the development team aims to lower the entry barrier and attract a broader audience. The new PvE content is positioned as a direct response to player demand for less competitive gameplay options within the sci-fi shooter.
According to Bungie’s roadmap, Season 2 will feature two experimental gameplay modes. The first is a PvE-focused experience with minimal PvP elements, while the second is a fully cooperative PvE mode where players must team up to complete objectives across multiple matches with persistent progression. These modes are designed to give players alternatives to Marathon’s core high-stakes PvPvE loop. The studio described these as experimental additions, suggesting they may evolve based on player feedback and engagement data during the season.

In the same open letter, Ziegler and the team openly acknowledged several ongoing problems with the current build of Marathon. These include a steep learning curve, poor onboarding experience for new players, unsatisfactory solo queue matchmaking, and visual clutter in high-level matches caused by excessive special effects. The studio has committed to addressing these pain points in upcoming seasons, with specific improvements planned for matchmaking systems, tutorial content, extraction mechanics, and overall PvPvE balance.

Marathon Season 2 is scheduled to go live on June 2nd, and it will bring the game’s first seasonal progress reset. This means players will see their current season progress wiped when the new season begins, a common practice in live-service titles to refresh the competitive landscape. The introduction of PvE modes alongside this reset signals Bungie’s intent to reshape the game’s identity beyond its original hardcore extraction shooter roots. Whether these changes can revitalize the player base remains to be seen, but the willingness to pivot so clearly is a promising sign for those who found Marathon’s original vision too intense.
