Final Fantasy XIV’s Japan Rating Upgraded to 17+ Due to Photo Feature
Square Enix’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV has received a rating upgrade in Japan, moving from CERO’s C rating (15+) to D rating (17+). According to reports from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, this change has surprised many players given that the game has maintained its current form since 2013, operating for over a decade without such adjustments. The developer has clarified that the rating adjustment stems not from changes to the game’s core content but rather from player behavior related to creative tools within the game.
The CERO rating adjustment specifically affects the Japanese market, where the game now carries a D rating indicating content suitable for players aged 17 and older. Internationally, Final Fantasy XIV maintains its existing ratings: ESRB’s T for Teen in North America and PEGI’s 16+ in Europe. Square Enix emphasized that while the game contains certain violent elements, suggestive content, and war-related themes, these existing features were not the reason for the recent rating upgrade. The change specifically addresses concerns related to player-generated content rather than developer-created material.
Square Enix identified the Gpose (group pose) photo feature as the primary factor behind the rating adjustment. The company stated that if they did not upgrade the rating, the alternative would have been to remove the Gpose functionality entirely from the game. This feature allows players to take and share screenshots within the game world, including character poses and environmental shots. The developer explained that the rating change resulted not from modifications to the game itself but from how players have been utilizing this photography tool.
The issue stems from players using the Gpose feature to create and share images that may contain more adult-oriented expressions. Final Fantasy XIV includes various fashion items and character customization options, some with bold designs that players can combine creatively. When these elements are photographed using specific angles, lighting, and poses through the Gpose system, the resulting images can potentially cross into more mature territory than the base game content. This represents an unusual case where player creativity rather than developer content has prompted regulatory changes. While the rating adjustment may inconvenience some younger players, it preserves the creative freedom that has become an integral part of the Final Fantasy XIV community experience.
