Assassin’s Creed Shadows Delivers Dual Protagonists and Deep Sengoku RPG Systems

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which launched on March 20, 2025, offers a distinct take on feudal Japan compared to Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima. While both games explore similar historical ground, Shadows introduces a dual-protagonist system, deeper RPG mechanics, and dynamic seasonal environments that directly influence gameplay. The title has already made a strong market impact, with Ubisoft reporting over one million players worldwide within its first half-day of release. The game is available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Mac, and the newly announced Switch 2 platform.
The game features two playable characters: Naoe, a shinobi from Iga, and Yasuke, a legendary samurai. Rather than offering interchangeable perspectives, the protagonists function as complementary combat partners whose narratives are tightly interwoven. Naoe specializes in stealth, using light, sound, and environmental cover to evade guards, gather intelligence through spy networks, and execute agile assassinations. Yasuke employs overwhelming force to break enemy lines directly. The two characters share a linked progression system where skill upgrades for one can benefit the other, creating strategic depth that a single-protagonist structure cannot replicate.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows places significant emphasis on historically grounded gameplay. Key locations such as Himeji Castle have been reconstructed with expert consultation, and players can interact with real historical figures including Oda Nobunaga and Akechi Mitsuhide, participating in pivotal events like the Honno-ji Incident. Each protagonist has an independent skill tree and equipment customization system tied to a hideout hub, where players gather materials, craft gear, train allies, and manage resources. The upcoming Claws of Awaji expansion will introduce new skills, outfits, and equipment usable in the base game.

The game’s open world, built on the ANVIL engine, features dynamic seasons and weather that directly affect tactical options. Dense spring and summer foliage favors Naoe’s stealth approach, while sparse autumn and winter vegetation suits Yasuke’s direct combat. Snow obstructs enemy vision and hearing, and strong winds reduce ranged accuracy. Beyond combat, the game includes intelligence warfare, ally recruitment, and base management systems. Post-launch content has sustained player engagement, including the pre-order exclusive Loyal Dog Justice mission and free story updates alongside the Claws of Awaji DLC. The game’s Xbox version has received a score of 87, reflecting stable performance across platforms. This is a well-rounded package for players seeking a historically rich, systems-driven samurai experience with lasting replay value.
