Analysts Say GTA 6 Going Digital-Only Will Not Hurt Sales

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 will no longer include a game disc. Instead, the retail box will contain only a digital download code. The announcement, made overnight, quickly sparked heated discussion among the player base, drawing both supportive voices and considerable opposition. However, according to a report from The Gamer, industry analysts widely believe that Rockstar’s decision will not have a noticeable impact on the game’s overall sales performance.
Game industry analyst Christopher Dring acknowledged during an interview that the decision will inevitably upset some players. He noted that certain users may find the change difficult to accept, and it could cause inconvenience for those less familiar with digital purchasing models. However, Dring added that for the vast majority of players, this will not make much of a difference. He emphasized that players will ultimately accept the situation, given that this is a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Dring further analyzed that the biggest beneficiaries of this change will be the digital stores on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Many players who are unwilling to pay for a physical box that contains only a redemption code will simply switch to purchasing the digital version instead. On the flip side, the most direct impact will be felt by offline second-hand game retailers and various online resale platforms, which rely on the availability of physical discs for their business models.

Mat Piscatella, Senior Director and industry analyst at Circana, a games research firm, expressed a completely aligned view. He stated that a physical edition containing only a download code will not significantly affect game sales. Piscatella went further, saying, “Regardless of the outcome, I don’t think it matters that much.” With both analysts converging on the same conclusion, the message is clear: while the decision may stir debate, Grand Theft Auto 6’s commercial prospects appear unlikely to suffer from the absence of a disc in the box. It seems that for a title of this magnitude, the method of delivery matters less than the game itself.
