Yao Yao Xi Tu Frostfire Update Brings Ice Magic, Hellfire Map and More

The Frostfire update for the co-op PvE shooter 遥遥西土 (Yao Yao Xi Tu) launched on August 27 during early access, delivering a fresh wave of content for the dark-fantasy western. Developed by French indie studio Evil Raptor, the game entered early access on April 28, 2026, surpassed one million copies sold within two weeks, and holds a 95% positive rating across more than 36,000 player reviews. Blending robot cowboys, spell-based shooting, and roguelike build-crafting, it sends four-player squads on bounty missions through a wasteland of strange creatures and supernatural threats. A limited-time 20% discount at a new all-time low price accompanies the update.
The update’s centerpiece is a new map called Hellfire, a lava-and-volcano-inspired doomsday battlefield crowned by a giant volcano that erupts periodically, sending burning meteors crashing to the ground. The terrain mixes molten rock with colossal metal skeletons and fused alloys, suggesting ancient giant robots that fell and merged with the land — an atmosphere that blends apocalyptic machine aesthetics with raw geological power. Easter egg hunters can find homages to classic works, including references to the Lord of the Rings’ Mount Doom. Hellfire contains three new missions and one hidden secret waiting to be discovered.

One of the update’s most striking additions is a shield system built around ice-element spells. Using ice magic grants an extra shield bar on top of health, but the shield gradually melts over time, and some new ice spells convert stored shields into heavy damage — creating a tactical cycle of accumulating and releasing. The new spell school also expands team play: a player can freeze into a high-speed sliding ice crystal that bowls through enemy crowds, while teammates fire floating frost bridges that act as fast travel lanes, damaging enemies they crush and shielding allies on board. Chained bridges can even reach areas normally inaccessible, changing how teams explore the map.

The update introduces a new melee weapon category with three weapons that support the same level of upgrades and customization as firearms, each paired with dedicated arcane cards for unique builds. Options include charged brass knuckles that unleash a conic explosive punch and a spinning lasso that sweeps 360 degrees around the wielder. In coordinated play, an ice mage can freeze enemies in a cone, thickening their own shield while leaving frozen foes vulnerable for melee finishers, and a banjo-playing teammate can weave through the squad adding chaos to battle. New player skins and more arcane cards expand customization. This is a substantial early-access content drop, and the ice-fire teamplay angle is one to watch for co-op fans.
