Todd Howard Criticizes Game Leaks for Causing Player Anxiety

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has expressed strong criticism of game leaks in a recent interview with gaming media GamesRadar. According to Howard, leaks provide no benefit to developers and instead create anxiety and confusion among players. He specifically cited the example of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which was leaked years before its official announcement through Microsoft legal documents. The director emphasized that leaked information often contains inaccuracies that mislead the gaming community about upcoming projects.
Howard explained that leaks typically contain erroneous information that leaves players uncertain about what they’re actually seeing. “Leaks never help us, nor do they help players,” Howard stated. “The so-called information you hear often contains misinformation, so players start to get anxious—what exactly is this? Is it a remaster? I heard it’s this, then I heard it’s that.” This confusion was particularly evident with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, where different interpretations of the leaked information caused significant player anxiety before the official reveal.

In response to these challenges, Bethesda adopted what Howard described as an “almost surprise release” strategy last year. The director reported that this approach proved highly successful in maintaining project secrecy and generating positive reception. The success of this strategy has prompted the development team to consider whether they should pursue more remastered titles in the future using similar surprise announcement tactics rather than allowing information to leak prematurely.
Howard concluded by addressing the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, clarifying that Bethesda is not rushing its development. The director noted that millions of players continue to engage with other titles in the series, allowing the studio to take the necessary time for proper development. While the team is considering additional remastered projects, Howard’s comments suggest Bethesda will continue prioritizing controlled information releases over allowing leaks to shape player expectations. This measured approach reflects the studio’s commitment to delivering polished experiences rather than responding to external pressures.
