TATSUJIN EXTREME Revives Classic Arcade Shooter After 38 Years
The classic arcade shooter series TATSUJIN has made its return after 38 years with the launch of TATSUJIN EXTREME. Released on July 30, 2026, by THQ Nordic Japan and TATSUJIN, this brand-new title carries forward the legacy of the original 1988 arcade game. The project is spearheaded by Masatoshi Yuge, the original planner, developer, and composer of the classic titles. TATSUJIN EXTREME is available now on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, with physical editions for PS5 and Switch 2 launching alongside digital versions that began distribution at 22:00 today.
The game retains the satisfying shooting action of the original series while updating the experience with modern 3D graphics, enhanced game systems, and refreshed music. Players can expect intense battles against massive bosses and a variety of weapons at their disposal. The story is presented through comic-style storytelling, adding narrative depth to the classic shooting formula. A demo is currently available, featuring four modes: TUTORIAL, HEART STARTER, STORY, and TEAM, allowing players to preview the game’s systems, though the demo does not support online rankings or save functionality.
Alongside the standard edition, a PREMIUM BOX edition is available packed with exclusive collectibles. This includes a 2-disc gold soundtrack CD featuring 78 total tracks, a metal ship figure measuring 74x68x22mm and weighing 115g, a 112-page art book, and a 128-page comic titled “Ash Edition,” all housed in a special box. Both standard and Premium Box editions include bonus DLC content featuring classic BGM tracks from TATSUJIN, TATSUJIN-OH, and BATSUGUN, each paired with exclusive ship skins for the player’s craft.
To celebrate the launch, a campaign is running from July 30 to August 6, offering 10 winners a Pipiru Alien plush toy, an exclusive non-sale item in Japan.
